Back to School, Back to Routine: 7 Laundry Hygiene Habits Every Family Should Know

Back to School, Back to Routine: 7 Laundry Hygiene Habits Every Family Should Know

September means a return to school, work, sports clubs and busier family routines. School uniforms are worn all day, PE kits come home in bags, towels are used more often and the washing basket rarely stays empty for long.

It is also a good time to reset a few simple laundry habits.

Everyday fabrics naturally collect sweat, body oils, dirt and microorganisms through normal use. Regular washing helps remove this build-up, while the way laundry is handled, dried and stored also plays a part in keeping clothes and household textiles fresh and hygienic.

Here are seven practical habits worth carrying into the new season.

1. Do Not Leave Damp Laundry Sitting Around

Wet towels, sports kits and freshly washed clothes should be dried promptly rather than left sitting damp in a basket or washing machine.

Moisture can quickly lead to stale odours and can encourage mould and mildew. If you cannot dry a load immediately, open the washing-machine door and move the clothes as soon as you can.

2. Give Towels and Sports Kits Extra Attention

Towels, gym clothes and PE kits tend to hold more moisture and sweat than many everyday garments.

Wash them regularly, follow the care label and allow them to dry fully before they are used again or placed back in a cupboard or sports bag.

3. Treat Heavily Soiled Laundry Differently

Most everyday clothing can be washed together as normal. Laundry that is heavily soiled or contaminated, however, deserves a little more care.

UK health guidance recommends handling contaminated laundry separately where appropriate and washing it at the hottest temperature suitable for the fabric.

If clothing, towels or bedding have been contaminated by vomit or diarrhoea, NHS guidance advises washing the affected items separately on a hot wash.

4. Use the Right Wash for the Fabric

Hotter is not automatically better for every load.

For normal everyday laundry, follow the garment care label and choose a suitable cycle for the fabric and level of soiling. When hygiene is a particular concern, use the highest appropriate temperature recommended for that item.

This protects the fabric while helping the detergent and washing cycle do their job effectively.

5. Avoid Overloading the Washing Machine

It can be tempting to squeeze one more uniform, towel or T-shirt into the drum, especially in a busy household.

But laundry needs enough room to move so that water and detergent can circulate through the load. Following your washing-machine manufacturer's recommended capacity can help you get more consistent results.

6. Remember That Fresh Scent and Clean Laundry Are Not the Same Thing

Fragrance can make laundry more enjoyable, but scent alone is not a measure of how clean a garment is.

A good laundry routine starts with effective washing, correct dosing, proper drying and sensible storage. Fragrance can then be added according to personal preference.

This is especially worth remembering when washing school uniforms, bedding, towels and clothes worn close to the skin.

7. Keep the Washing Machine Clean Too

The appliance doing the cleaning also needs some attention.

Remove residue from the detergent drawer, check the door seal, keep the drum ventilated between washes where appropriate and follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintenance or cleaning cycles.

A simple monthly check can help prevent residue, moisture and unwanted odours from building up.
